What is a Computer?
A computer is an electronic device that processes data according to a set of instructions called a program. It accepts raw data as input, processes it, and produces meaningful information as output.
Generations of Computers
- 1st Generation (1940–56): Vacuum tubes, machine language, e.g. ENIAC.
- 2nd Generation (1956–63): Transistors, assembly language, e.g. IBM 1401.
- 3rd Generation (1964–71): Integrated circuits, high-level languages, e.g. IBM 360.
- 4th Generation (1971–present): Microprocessors, personal computers.
- 5th Generation (future): AI, parallel processing.
Classification
Computers are classified by size: Supercomputer, Mainframe, Minicomputer, Microcomputer, and Embedded computer.
